1896 - 1949

Cartoonist Clifford Berryman provided the illustrations for an article on Captain Charles D. Sigsbee entitled, "Greeting to Sigsbee: President and People Pay the Brave Officer Homage." Sigsbee was a naval officer and inventor who was captain of the infamous USS Maine at the time of its sinking in Havana Harbor, Cuba, February 15, 1898. His testimony of the expediency in which Spanish officials and crew on a nearby civilian vessel came to the aid of survivors from the Maine delayed immediate military retaliation, delaying the Spanish American War for two months.
